Community Service
The Delta Sigma Phi fraternity has participated in several community service projects from the beginning.
Service has always been a tremendous part of the Delta Sigma Phi organization, as a national organization as
well as locally. At Delta Sigma Phi, we realize that giving back to the community is not only rewarding, but
a needed action because we all live in the community too.
Our Halloween Canned Food Drive started in 1990, and continues to the present day. This event held annually
on Halloween night, brings together brothers and pledges of Delta Sigma Phi along with other members of the
UNC Charlotte community. The collection process is done by participants "trick-or-treating," through local
neighborhoods in the Greater Charlotte area for canned goods. This past year's event exceeded all other
previous years by bringing in over 2,500 pounds of canned food and non-perishables. This donation makes
Delta Sigma Phi one of the largest non-profit contributors to Second Harvest.
Quarterly, members and pledges maintain a one-mile section of road under North Carolina's Adopt a Highway
Program. The project involves brothers taking time out of their schedules on weekends to walk along the
highway picking up trash and other debris. This event helps to give back to the community by not only
cleaning up the road, but also contributing to the beautification of our city.
Numerous other events also contribute to Delta Sigma Phi's community service involvement. Beginning the
year, the fraternity sits down and lays out quantitative goals that will try to be reached.
We worked for Coulwood Park Service, spreading mulch and clearing a natural forest area. We participated in
the Relay for Life walkathon in which we had at least ten members walking around the track for cancer. We also
sent several brothers to help fellow Pi Kappa Alpha in their service week held in the spring semester of 2003.
Delta Sigma Phi is active in many aspects of the Charlotte community. For many members, being enlightened to
community service through the fraternity opens their eyes to alternative ways of giving back to the community.
Some members of Delta Sigma Phi have then participated in individual long-term service events in the past year.
One member volunteered his services at a local youth camp during the summer of 2003. Another member volunteered
delivering meals to the elderly. It is this kind of initiative that sets Delta Sig apart from others, members
taking it upon them to contribute to the whole.
